Essential oils (EOs) have been used for thousands of years to heal and enhance all four realms of human existence – affecting us on spiritual, emotional, mental and physical levels. They were once a daily part of life. And many ancient texts and records indicate that they were used to treat virtually every ailment and condition known to mankind at the time.
During the last century, EOs (and other therapeutic aids) fell into disuse with the advance of modern antibiotics and the rise of the pharmaceutical industry. However, their broad-spectrum anti-bacterial and other therapeutic properties are being rediscovered by researchers and health-care professionals.
This research along with the growing concern over the health risks and failures of pharmaceuticals has encouraged a resurgence in their popularity in the United States during the last couple of decades.
Worldwide there are about 3000 oils in use today. Approximately 300 are in general use comprising an effective medicinal system. Their versatility lends them to a wide spectrum of uses including personal enhancement, health treatments, first aid and many household applications. EOs are being used:
I’ve personally used the oils for over 20 years for my health, personal care, cooking and household purposes. As a practitioner of biospiritual living, they’re an integral part of my daily life. I’ve come to know and use pure therapeutic grade essential oils with understanding and have developed a deep respect for their elegance. As biospiritual allies, they operate effectively on the cellular physical level, and in the emotional, intellectual, spiritual and aesthetic areas of our lives. If anything in this world is holistic, it is aromatherapy with essential oils.
Essential oils are the aromatic liquid or resinous substances extracted from certain species of plants, grasses, bushes and trees. Depending on the plant, any part including its flowers, fruits, leaves, bark and/or roots may be used. EOs are the ‘life force’ or essence of a plant. The oil or resin carries nutrients throughout the plant and protects it from any form of stress. It functions as the plant’s protection against infections and other diseases and it’s considered “essential” because without it, the plant couldn’t live.
In their pure state, the oils are highly concentrated. Their potencies can be from 100 to 10,000 times more concentrated than when using the plant itself. Even though they’re so potent, essential oils are generally considered safe. Unlike pharmaceuticals – they very rarely have any negative side effects. Yet their positive effects can at times be dramatic, some even say “miraculous.”
I’ve enjoyed the many benefits of using these oils over the years. Countless others have experienced their wonderful health supporting qualities as well.
