Self healing is a holistic approach that involves all aspects of life. This includes body, mind, and emotions. It also includes spiritual healing.
The nine experts and six older adults interviewed discussed four main themes related to self-healing. The physiology theme included lifestyle, exercise, healthy sleep and eating habits, and illness control.
Emotional Wounds
A person’s emotional wounds can cause pain, anger, resentment, depression and anxiety. It is important to recognize and acknowledge these wounds in order to start the healing process. Emotional wounds can come from a variety of things, such as traumatic events, loss of a loved one, abuse, neglect and difficult family relationships.
These emotional wounds can also have a negative impact on a person’s physical well-being. They can cause symptoms such as achy muscles, difficulty sleeping and low energy. People who are struggling with emotional trauma should seek help from a licensed professional.
Healing from an emotional wound can be a long process. It is essential to be patient and compassionate with yourself throughout the journey. It can also be helpful to practice self-care, such as getting plenty of rest and practicing mindfulness techniques. Moreover, it can be beneficial to seek support from friends and family or join a support group for individuals who have experienced the same traumas.
Mental Wounds
When a person has mental wounds, they might cry over small things, be easily offended by a word or get angry over trivial matters. They can also feel pessimistic about the world or despair with their lives. This is a sign that they need to start self healing.
Mental self healing involves regulating your breathing and talking to yourself. While this may be scary at first, it will help you to work through your emotions. You will be able to acknowledge your tough feelings and realize that they do pass even if it doesn’t feel like it.
Another way to heal yourself is to seek help from a therapist. This will allow you to understand what caused your emotional wounds and how you can heal them. It can also improve your mood and boost your quality of life. Moreover, it will help you to avoid reliving your trauma in the future. The therapy will teach you healthy coping skills and ways to overcome your negative beliefs about the past.
Physical Wounds
Wound healing is a complex, four-phase process that must occur in a precise and regulated way. Any interruption or aberrancy will slow or even inhibit the wound’s ability to heal. Minor wounds may heal without intervention, but a serious cut or infected wound requires first aid and treatment by a doctor.
Psychological stress has been found to impair the physiological responses required for wound healing. Specifically, psychological stress activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal and sympathetic-adrenal-medullary axes, resulting in enhanced glucocorticoids and catecholamine production. This can also result in a reduction of the inflammatory phase of wound repair.
In addition, stress can directly promote unhealthy health behavior practices. For example, people who report higher levels of psychological stress tend to smoke more cigarettes, consume more alcohol, exercise less frequently and make poorer food choices.
Spiritual Wounds
Spiritual healing is a journey to self-awareness, inner strength and spiritual connection. It involves addressing past hurts and limiting beliefs that keep us from living life to the fullest. Self-healing also means cultivating healthy coping strategies, improving self-esteem and cultivating a greater sense of purpose.
If left unchecked, spiritual wounds can cause individuals to lose empathy with others and only see the world as a selfish place. This can interfere with their ability to love their neighbours or family members.
