Wellness consciousness empowers you to assume a proactive and significant role in your own health. It is an internal process that encompasses all the dimensions of wellness: physical, social, emotional and spiritual.
This study confirms that the positive effect of health consciousness on home-based exercise is mediated by health life goal and perceived behavioral control.
Physical
Physical wellness involves staying physically fit and healthy by practicing health-related habits. It includes activities like regular exercise, a balanced diet and drinking enough water to stay hydrated. It also helps in keeping the body strong and resistant to disease.
In this study, we analyzed the relationship between health consciousness and home-based exercise during the pandemic of COVID-19 using Structural Equation Modeling. We found that health life goal and perceived behavioral control mediate the relationship between wellness consciousness and home-based exercise. Moreover, the stronger people’s health consciousness is, the more likely they are to adopt healthy behaviors and maintain them. This reflects their deep desire to keep healthy and avoid diseases.
Social
People with healthy social networks are more likely to practice self-care habits. They are less prone to anxiety and stress, which can cause physical illnesses such as heart disease and high blood pressure.
You probably exercise near-daily, add spinach to your smoothies and prioritize your sleep—but one wellness box you might not be checking is your social wellness. That’s what therapist Babita Spinelli calls “meaningful relationships and connections with friends, family, and community.” It also includes having a sense of belonging.
Occupational
Occupational wellness refers to the happiness and satisfaction you derive from your occupation. This aspect of wellness also includes your work-life balance and how closely your career aligns with your values and aspirations.
Fulfilling careers are important for your overall happiness and mental health, which is why workplaces should be more mindful of employee satisfaction. Companies should consider implementing mentorship programs that foster good relationships and help employees find a happy, healthy balance between their work and personal life.
Occupational wellness also includes the intellectual pursuit of knowledge, which may include reading books or listening to podcasts. Engaging in these activities can be fun, challenging and rewarding.
Emotional
Emotional wellness is about the ability to recognize and acknowledge your feelings, both positive and negative. It also means being able to manage stress effectively and learn from life’s challenges.
Cultivating mindfulness can increase emotional wellness by promoting self-awareness and reducing rumination. Other ways to boost your emotional wellness include spending time with friends and family, exercising regularly and engaging in meaningful activities.
This dimension focuses on the individual’s ability to take control of their health and well-being, especially through home-based exercise. It has a direct relationship with health consciousness and is influenced by several other variables, including health life goal and perceived behavioral control.
Spiritual
Spiritual wellness involves a sense of connection and purpose in life. It includes the pursuit of meaning and faith in a greater good, and may include religious practice, self-reflection, mindfulness, or a community of like-minded people.
Spiritual wellness also includes caring for others and for the planet, as well as practicing gratitude, compassion and forgiveness. It can be nurtured through meditation, prayer, time in nature, writing, yoga and other physical movement, expressing gratitude, or giving someone a hug. Defining core values is another way to enhance spiritual wellness. Keeping a journal can help you track the progress of your spiritual growth. Free writing allows you to externalize your feelings and can lead to profound insights.
Intellectual
Intellectual wellness encourages learning and finding ways to expand knowledge and skills. It also stimulates curiosity and motivates people to explore new ideas in order to become more mindful and well-rounded.
It can be achieved through education (both inside and outside the classroom), engaging in activities that stimulate the brain such as puzzles, discussions or student org meetings and by being open to seeing all perspectives and recognizing different opinions. It also involves a commitment to being a lifelong learner.
Keeping your brain healthy by regularly challenging it will help you think more clearly and positively about life. It will improve your concentration, memory and the ability to make decisions.
