What is Your Life Purpose?
Throughout time, three existential questions have defined the meaning of every thoughtful life. - Who am I?
- Why am I here?
- What is my life purpose?
Although I’ve developed my own personal life philosophy - I won’t pretend to know the definitive answers to any of these questions. Even as the scope of this article certainly cannot provide an in-depth discussion that could do them true justice. That being said, let’s see where this takes us…
Who am I?
Perhaps you’ve heard an answer to this question something along the lines of “You are a spiritual being having a physical experience.” True enough. Now, let’s expand that statement: - Your are an Infinitely powerful, wise and abundant being!
- You have an unlimited desire and ability to play and express yourself creatively.
- You are a self-organizing system – an energy field with an inherent purpose for existing.
How do you relate this to your daily life? On a practical level - whatever that "inherent purpose for existing" happens to be, it is revealed when you truly know who you are. As you come to know yourself better, you gain clarity about your purpose. When you’re clear about your purpose, what you want will show up in your life and only to the extent you’re clear. As you gain clarity of purpose, you discover the things that you could never have expected - that you could never have predicted in advance - begin to happen in your life. So, knowing who you are is the foundational first step for understanding on a deep level why you are here.
Why am I here?
You came here to play “The Game of Life.” The answer to the Why can be found in the How you play “The Game.” There’s a great 36 page free ebook called The Business School of Consciousness by Robert Scheinfeld that elaborates this point very well. This ebook is the first portion of his latest print book, Busting Loose from The Business Game – Mind-blowing Strategies for Recreating Yourself, Your Team, Your Customers, Your Business, and Everything in Between. Although this book shows you how to step out of the “old” way of playing The Business Game and into a completely new game, Scheinfeld ultimately recognizes that The Business Game is simply one aspect of the larger Human Game of Life. You can download the free ebook
here.
And Amazon carries the full print version of the book.

Which brings us now to the third question...
What is my life purpose?
You have a general purpose for being here and a purpose that is a unique and specific expression.
In the larger sense, many believe the overall purpose of life is quite simply to experience Joy. In his ebook, Scheinfeld further defines our overall purpose being “to play The Human Game and receive the benefits people receive from playing all games: fun, enjoyment, entertainment, challenge, stretching, expansion, exploring ‘what would happen if…’ scenarios.”Essentially, your general purpose in life is to: - Explore The Human Game
- Express yourself creatively
- Challenge yourself and have fun
Within this larger existence, each of us is a unique expression of life; each of us is born with an inherent purpose - which is to explore the general purpose as a specific unique expression. Your purpose is separate from your goals. Many think of it as their destiny. I generally refer to it as your life’s work or lifework: life•work - the work to which a person's life is devoted; most important work of one's life------ The chief or entire work of a person's lifetime.---- : the entire or principal work of one's lifetime ; also : a work extending over a lifetime lifework synonyms ----occupation, career, vocation; see business 1, profession 1, purpose 1. Expressing your true or authentic self is your lifework - the most important work of your life. But how many of us fully live our life’s work? Many people will never recognize their unique life expression. They’ll move through lives with vague longings and unfulfilled desires. Do any of these statements sound familiar? - I want to know what my life purpose is.
- I’m confused, I know there is something I’m supposed to be doing, but I don’t know what it is.
- If only I could get some clarity, then I’d know where to begin…
You can discover your life purpose and begin living a more authentic life aligned with what you came here to do. Life is self-reflective and communicates with us in a language of symbols and synchronicities. Our job is to develop awareness, learn how to listen and most importantly – RESPOND to these communications. Our purpose can be seen in our - Childhood dreams and goals
- Natural inclinations
- Passions and moments of deep happiness
- Continual intuitions and inner promptings
The following articles offer techniques and exercises designed to help you identify your unique life expression or purpose. Some will resonate for you and attract your interest. Others, not so much. Use what’s helpful. Over time and by practicing awareness, you’ll gain clarity and identify your core personal values. Intentions and actions will begin aligning more and more with your values.
