Glutathione ~ The Body's Master Antioxidant and Detoxifier

...if you are feeling any of the symptoms being reported in the Gulf region emergency, sodium bicarbonate medical baths should be immediately initiated if you want to neutralize the hazardous toxicity. The same goes for glutathione suppositories, which should also be taken instantly upon symptom onset. ~ The Mightly Mallet of Baking Soda

Dr. Mark Sircus and the International Medical Veritas Association (IMVA) have developed a comprehensive protocol for detoxifying the body when exposed to toxic environments such as is occurring in the Gulf of Mexico coastal states. In this protocol, Dr. Sircus recommends using glutathione in suppository form as one of the internal methods for detoxifying the body. He strongly advises using both internal detoxing methods in addition to external methods. Glutathione is the crucial “cornerstone” enzyme the body uses to detoxify chemicals and heavy metals and is quickly depleted by toxin overload. Dr. Sircus recommends administering glutathione in suppository form because “the highly vascular intestines provide a perfect way for beneficial substances to be absorbed into the bloodstream without being broken down by the stomach’s acids or deactivated by the enzymes in the liver. My recommendation is to start doses at one suppository a day of 500 mg to monitor for reactions, then work up to 3-4 a day if exposure levels are high, and do this for an extended period of time.” ~ Medical Treatments for Airborne Poisons

The importance of glutathione as the body’s master antioxidant and detoxifier simply can’t be stressed enough. Every system in the body is affected by the relative levels of this enzyme. The more toxic the body is, the faster glutathione levels decrease. Although Dr. Sircus recommends the suppository method of delivery in a critical situation, this is not always practical or available. You cannot take glutathione as a pill supplement because it is manufactured by the body inside the cell or in the liver from three precursor amino acids - glycine, glutamic acid and cysteine. A steady, daily intake of glutathione supportive foods is the best way to maintain high levels of the enzyme in the body. Food sources that increase glutathione do so by providing the precursors of glutathione or in some way enhance its production by the body. Food sources of glutathione precursors include:

  • Raw goat whey and/ goat milk which are very high in cysteine and readily absorbed by the body. However, be sure the goats are free of antibiotics and hormones and are grass fed. An acceptable alternative would be dry powder of un-denatured whey protein.
  • Raw eggs.
  • Rice bran is high in Alpha Lipoic Acid and promotes glutathione synthesis in the body.
  • The Brassica vegetables - broccoli, (especially broccoli sprouts), cabbage, cauliflower, kale, Brussel sprouts, bok choy, watercress, mustard, horseradish, turnips, rutabagas, kohlrabi - as well as onions and garlic, contain sulforaphane. Sulforaphane is a natural organsulfer compound that, among its many functions, switches on several detoxification enzymes including the gene needed for cells to activate the production of glutathione
  • Avocados, aloe vera, asparagus, bilberry, red beets, grape seed extract, okra, peaches, rosemary, and watermelon are high in precursors
  • As are several spices found in Indian curry including, cinnamon, cardamom, curcumin and turmeric.
  • Pycnogenol from pine bark.
  • Brazil nuts are very high in selenium which is a co-factor for the enzyme glutathione peroxidase. 1 or 2 Brazil nuts per day is all that is needed. They also contain high levels of magnesium, which helps increase glutathione.
  • Other foods high in magnesium include almonds, cashews, pine nuts, artichokes, spinach, black, navy and white beans, pumpkin seeds, cornmeal, whole wheat and buckwheat flours, and especially raw oat bran.
  • Milk thistle is a liver detoxifier and protectant and helps prevent glutathione depletion in the liver.

Including these foods regularly in your diet gives your body what it needs to maintain adequate glutathione levels, help its detoxification process and effectively return to a state of health and wellness.
