Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Frequency Pollution
Information about the harmful biological effects of electromagnetic frequency pollution (EMF) emitted by cell phones, cell towers, wireless internet signals (WiFi) and even the portable phone sitting on your night stand next to your bed is finally beginning to get some mainstream media coverage.
Public awareness and education of this massive health hazard is long overdue – especially in the U.S. - and much more of it is desperately needed.
Lloyd Morgan, lead author of the report, Cellphones and Brain Tumors: 15 Reasons for Concern, Science, Spin and the Truth Behind Interphone, and member of the Bioelectromagnetics Society puts it this way:
“Exposure to cell phone radiation is the largest human health experiment ever undertaken, without informed consent, and has some 4 billion participants enrolled.
Science has shown increased risk of brain tumors from use of cell phones, as well as increased risk of eye cancer, salivary gland tumors, testicular cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and leukemia.
The public must be informed.”
In a video presentation on Wireless Hazards given by several speakers including Camilla Rees, MBA, founder of
Electromagnetichealth.org
filmed at Columbia University Law School, the following list of biological effects of EMF pollution on the human body was detailed:
Genetic effects
Cancer
Cellular/molecular
Behavioral changes
Nervous system
Blood-brain barrier permeability
Cardiovascular
Sleeping disorder
Hormonal disturbance
Immune system
Metabolic effects
Autoimmunity
Fertility impairment
Impaired learning

Even more unfortunate than these emerging human health issues is the fact that the effects on humans is only one area of concern and arguably potentially of least importance. This is because research is showing that the harmful biological effects of EMFs impact the larger biosphere as well. And these effects profoundly influence the natural balance of Earth’s biosystems.
For example, cell tower radiation emissions are interfering with the honeybee’s ability to return to their hives and may be contributing to the worldwide decline in bee population. Bee colony collapse disorder has far-reaching ramifications for today’s agricultural industry which relies on honeybees for crop pollination. (Of course, EMF is only one of several environmental assaults on the health and vitality of bee colonies)
Cell towers are also contributing to the death of migratory birds as well by causing disorientation and navigation difficulties resulting in the disruption of ancient flight patterns.
Worldwide Awareness and Activism
Worldwide concern is mounting over the potentially disastrous consequences we have set in motion. Alarm bells sound as the impact of our entitled attitudes and seemingly insatiable addiction to the latest version of the Plug-In Drug gains recognition.
Glimmers of hope dance on the horizon:
France has banned cell phone use in primary schools
Schools in the U.K. are banning cell phones
U.K. Teachers Union wants no wifi in the schools
Some communities in the England are dismantling cell towers
There’s even an EMF Refuge Zone designated in southeastern France
The European Parliament voted to recommend precautions regarding wireless technologies and cell towers.
More aggressive tones have been set however in instances where cell towers have been bombed in Ireland and towers sabotaged in Australia and Israel.
A Little Late Getting Out of The Gate
It seems the U.S. has taken a head-in-the-sand position with regards to EMF pollution for reasons that include the efforts of powerful lobbyists. Yet there are signs that awareness and activism are gaining momentum:
Los Angeles School District called for the return of state and local government’s rights to limit antennas
The U.S. Governors or Florida, Connecticut and Colorado declared May 2009 “Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Awareness Month”
And a powerful statement was made recently by the U.S. Senate in a hearing that confirmed the dangers of cell phones.
It’s a beginning at least, but we’ve got a mountain before us to climb.
